The modern taskbar in Business Central is a redesigned version of the action bar that appears at the top of pages. Microsoft introduced it in 2024 to make the interface more efficient. The goal was simple: put the tools users need closer to hand, so they spend less time clicking through menus. In short, this is Microsoft’s step toward a cleaner, faster daily experience in BC.

What Is the Modern Taskbar?

The modern taskbar replaces the older action bar layout with a more streamlined design. Actions are grouped in a cleaner way, and the most-used options are easier to reach. Also, the Copilot button sits in the bar, so AI features are always one click away when you need them.

In practice, this means fewer clicks to get to common actions. For example, if you regularly use the same buttons on a sales order or a journal, they are now quicker to find. Furthermore, the layout is consistent across different page types. So once you learn where things are, you do not need to relearn it for each page. As a result, this helps reduce the small friction points that slow users down in daily work.

Switching Off the Modern Taskbar

Changing a user interface that people use every day is never simple. Some users will prefer the old layout. Microsoft has accounted for this. If you do not want to use the new bar, you can switch back to the legacy taskbar in your user settings.

To do this, go to the settings wheel in the top right corner of BC and look for the taskbar option. There you can select the legacy taskbar instead of the new one. However, it is worth trying the new design first. Many users find they prefer it once they have used it for a short time. Moreover, staying on the new version means you get the latest features as Microsoft adds them.

Copilot Access in the Modern Taskbar

One of the key reasons to stay on the modern taskbar is Copilot access. The Copilot button sits directly in the modern taskbar, so AI-assisted features are easy to reach from any page. This includes features like suggested sales lines, field assistance, and analysis views.

So if your team is starting to use Copilot in BC, the modern taskbar makes that experience smoother. You do not need to hunt for the Copilot option. It is right there in the bar. Additionally, as Microsoft adds more Copilot features in future releases, they will be available through the same entry point.

Improved Error Handling in Business Central

Alongside the modern taskbar, Microsoft also improved how BC handles errors. When an error appears, BC now gives you better options for what to do next. Instead of a plain error message with no clear path forward, you now have three options to share the error details with the person who can help you.

Three Ways to Share Error Details

When an error pops up, you can now copy the technical details to a text file, send them directly to a Teams chat, or create an email with the error information already attached. This means you do not need to try to describe the error from memory when you reach out for support. Consequently, the person helping you gets the full picture right away. Therefore, issues get resolved faster because the support person knows exactly where to look.

This is also useful from a partner’s point of view. When a user calls in with an error, the support team often needs more technical detail than a general description. Now, users can pass that detail on with one click. As a result, the back-and-forth of diagnosing the issue is shorter for both sides. Moreover, the error information is exact – not a paraphrase – so there is less room for the wrong fix to be applied. This saves time for everyone involved.

Direct Link to Missing Setup

One specific error type got a big improvement: missing posting setup. If BC cannot post a document because a setup combination is missing, the error message now includes a direct link to the setup page where the missing entry needs to be added.

For example, if you try to post a sales document and BC says the general posting setup for a certain combination does not exist, you can click the link in the error and go straight to the setup page. So you do not need to know where that page lives in BC. The error takes you there. Furthermore, this helps users fix their own setup issues without always needing to call for support. In short, it turns a confusing error into a guided fix.

Wrapping Up: Modern Taskbar and UX Updates in Business Central

Kim says hi! - modern taskbar

The modern taskbar and the error handling updates are two different improvements, but they share the same goal: making BC easier to use every day. In terms of navigation, the new bar reduces clicks and gives quick access to Copilot. For errors, the new handling reduces the time it takes to understand and fix problems when they come up. Together, these changes make BC a more practical tool for the people who use it daily.

Additionally, both features are available in the standard BC product – no extra setup or add-ons required. So if you have not yet explored the modern taskbar or the new error handling options, they are worth a look. Check out the full video on the NAV SEAL YouTube channel to see them in action.
