Every page in Business Central has a standard layout with a set of fields shown by default. However, not every team needs the same fields visible. BC hides some fields because you use them only occasionally. Others are visible but not relevant to your daily work. The page personalization feature in BC lets you adjust what you see on any page without any technical changes. Specifically, you can add fields, remove them from view, and restore the default layout – all from the page itself.

What Page Personalization Does in Business Central

Page personalization lets each user customize their own view of a page in BC. Changes you make apply only to your user account and do not affect other users. So if you add a field to the sales order page, that field is visible to you but not to other team members unless they add it themselves.

Additionally, page personalization is not a configuration change. It does not modify the underlying setup of the page or the system. Instead, it changes what you see on screen when you open that page. So it is safe to use without involving your system administrator.

Furthermore, BC remembers your page personalization settings between sessions. Once you add a field, it stays visible every time you open that page. You do not need to re-apply the setting each time you log in.

How to Access the Page Personalization Mode

To start personalizing a page, click the settings wheel icon in the top right corner of Business Central. Then, select Personalize from the dropdown. The page enters page personalization mode – a red arrow appears as you move your cursor around the page to indicate what you can interact with.

You will also see a small toolbar appear at the top of the page. This toolbar has options that let you add fields, move elements, hide items, and exit personalization mode. Specifically, the Field option is what you use when you want to add a new field to the page. When you click it, BC shows you a list of all available fields that are not currently visible on the page.

Adding Fields to the Page

To add a field, first click on the section of the page you want to work on. For a sales order, you might click on the order lines section. Next, click More in the personalization toolbar, then click Field. A list of available fields appears. These are fields that exist in the system but are not shown on the page by default.

Find the field you want to add. Then, click on it in the list. The field appears on the page. Click it again and select Show to make it visible. After that, click Done to exit personalization mode and save your changes.

Commonly Added Fields

For example, two fields teams commonly add to the sales order lines are the General Business Posting Group and the General Product Posting Group. By default, these fields are not shown on the lines but they exist in the system. Also, teams that work with those values daily often add fields like bin codes, unit costs, or promised delivery dates. In short, the field list shows everything available for that section, so you can browse it to see what might be useful. Additionally, the same process applies to the page header, the FactBox panel, and other page areas – you are not limited to just the line section when using this feature.

Selecting the Right Area on the Page

One common mistake when using the feature is selecting the wrong area before adding a field. The list of available fields depends on which section of the page you have selected. For example, if you are on the sales order header, you will see header fields. If you want to add a field to the order lines, you must first click on the lines section. So always make sure you are in the correct area before opening the field list. This ensures the fields you see are the ones you can actually add to that specific part of the page. For example, if you are working on the order lines, click anywhere on the lines section first – then open the field list to see only line-level fields.

How BC Saves Your Page Personalization

Once you click Done, BC saves your page personalization automatically. The next time you open the same page – or any record of the same type – your changes will be there. For example, if you add a field to the sales order lines, it will appear on every sales order you open, not just the one you had open when you made the change.

Also, page personalization settings apply across the page type. So if you personalize the sales order page, those settings carry over to all sales orders. The same is true for other pages across BC. Therefore, you only need to set up a personalization once for it to apply consistently.

Clearing and Resetting Personalized Views

If you want to undo your changes and return to the default layout, go back to the settings wheel and select Personalize. Then, in the personalization toolbar, click Clear Personalizations. BC gives you the option to clear only specific elements – such as field columns and parts – or to clear all personalizations on the page at once.

If you are unsure what you have changed, selecting All is the safest option. However, note that this step cannot be undone. Once you confirm, BC removes all the fields you added from view and the page returns to its default layout. Consequently, if you had added many fields, you would need to add them again one by one. So it is worth reviewing what you are clearing before confirming.

Wrapping Up: Page Personalization in Business Central

Kim says hi! - page personalization

The page personalization feature gives you a straightforward way to adjust what you see on any page in BC. You can add fields BC hides by default, move elements to a better position, and reset everything if needed. You need no developer. Moreover, BC saves your changes automatically and apply consistently every time you open that page.

In short, if there are fields you regularly need to check or update on a page in BC, adding them through page personalization is the fastest way to make that happen. Set it up once and the layout stays in place.
