AI Readiness

Everyone is excited about AI in Business Central. Almost no one is ready for it.

The gap between what AI promises and what your BC environment can actually deliver isn’t a technology problem. It’s a foundation problem — and most companies don’t find out until it’s expensive.

We’ve had the same conversation a dozen times in the last year. A leadership team comes to us energised. They’ve seen the Microsoft Copilot demos. They’ve read the case studies. They want to move fast — automate procurement, surface AI-driven insights, streamline approval flows.

Then we look at their Business Central environment.

And we have to deliver the news that nobody wants to hear: the AI isn’t the problem. The data underneath it is.

“AI in Business Central doesn’t fail because the technology is bad. It fails because it inherits every bad decision, dirty record, and forgotten workaround in your ERP — and amplifies them.”

What we see

The five warning signs your BC environment isn’t AI-ready.

Before any AI initiative can deliver value, the foundation has to be solid. In our experience, most BC environments have at least three of these five issues — often more:

  • Dimension inconsistency. Departments have been posting to dimensions differently for years. AI-powered reporting will faithfully reflect the mess — and present it as insight.
  • Item master chaos. Duplicate items, inconsistent units of measure, missing categorisation. Ask Copilot to analyse inventory performance and it’s working with fiction.
  • Workarounds baked into the workflow. Every “we’ve always done it this way” manual step is a gap in the process AI needs to automate. It can’t automate what it can’t see.
  • Customisations without documentation. Nobody remembers why that extension was built, what it touches, or whether it will survive the next upgrade. AI-generated code will collide with it.
  • No data governance process. AI readiness isn’t a one-time cleanup. Without a process for maintaining data quality, you’re cleaning today so the problem can grow back tomorrow.

Why it matters now

The window to get ahead of this is closing.

Microsoft is embedding AI deeper into Business Central with every release. That’s a genuine opportunity — but only for companies whose environments are built to take advantage of it. For everyone else, each new Copilot feature is just another way to surface bad data faster.

The organisations that invest in getting their BC foundation right today will be the ones extracting real competitive advantage from AI in 12 months. The ones that skip that step will spend those same 12 months explaining to their leadership why the AI project “didn’t quite work out.”

“Getting AI-ready isn’t a technology project. It’s a business decision about whether you want AI to accelerate your operations — or expose their weaknesses.”

What good looks like

AI readiness is a structured, achievable outcome.

At NAV SEAL, we’ve developed a structured AI Readiness Assessment specifically for Business Central environments. We audit your data model, dimension strategy, item and vendor masters, existing customisations, and process documentation — then give you a prioritised remediation roadmap.

Not a vague recommendation to “clean up your data.” A specific, sequenced action plan that tells you what to fix, in what order, and what it unlocks at each stage.

Most clients come out of the assessment with a clear picture of where they actually stand — which, for many, is the first honest view they’ve had of their BC environment in years. Some are closer to ready than they feared. Some have more work to do. Either way, they know. And knowing is the only way to make a sensible decision about when and how to invest in AI.

The question isn’t whether AI is coming to your Business Central environment. It already is. The only question is whether your environment is ready to make something useful of it.

Find out where you actually stand.

NAV SEAL’s BC AI Readiness Assessment is a fixed-fee engagement that gives you a clear, honest picture of your environment and a prioritised roadmap to get AI-ready — before you commit to anything bigger.
