Business Central 2024 Wave 2 brought several long-awaited improvements to the service module. Four features are now live – and one major addition is on the way.
The service module in Business Central has long lagged behind the sales and purchase areas. Many features available on sales documents were simply not available on service documents. However, the 2024 Wave 2 release closes several of those gaps. In short, the service module now supports attachments, invoice posting policy, item blocking, and warehouse shipment. Also, a billing feature is planned for the near future. Together, these updates make service a more complete part of BC.
Attachments in the Service Module
Sales and purchase documents in BC have supported attachments for a long time. The service module did not have this – until now. You can now attach files to service orders and service contracts. All other service document types in BC support attachments too.
This is a simple but useful improvement. For example, on a service contract, you can attach a signed copy of the agreement, a maintenance schedule, or a product warranty. BC stores these files directly on the record so they are easy to find. Any team member who opens the order or contract can view them. Furthermore, there is no need to check another system. So all the supporting data stays close to the record where it belongs.
In practice, this change saves time on every service job where paperwork is involved. Before this, teams kept files in email threads or shared folders. Now they belong on the record itself. Also, this makes the module work the same way as sales and purchase documents. New users who know the sales side of BC will find it easy to learn. In addition, it means fewer steps to find the right file when a question comes up during a job.
Invoice Posting Policy in the Service Module
The invoice posting policy setting controls who can post invoices and under what conditions. Sales teams have used this setting for years. Now the service module has it too. You can set a posting policy on service documents to control which users can post and when.
How the Posting Policy Works in Service
For instance, you might want only a billing team member to post a service invoice – not the tech who finished the job. With the posting policy in place, BC enforces that rule. Also, you can use it to require a review step before any service invoice goes out. Consequently, it gives you the same control over service invoices that sales teams have used for years. Furthermore, setting up the policy requires no custom code – it is a built-in setting on the service setup page. So it is quick to configure and ready to use right away.
Item Blocking for Service Transactions
BC lets you block items on the item card to stop them from appearing in transactions. Before this release, that blocking did not apply to the service module. You could block an item from sales and purchases, but a technician could still add it to a service order. That gap is now closed. So the item blocking feature now works the same way across all three areas: sales, purchase, and service. As a result, blocking an item is a single action with full effect across all document types.
You can now block an item for service. It is a simple setting on the item card. Once you set it, BC stops the item from appearing on service contracts, service orders, and service lines. This is useful when a component is recalled, faulty, or no longer approved for use. For example, if a spare part has a known defect, you block it for service and the system prevents any technician from adding it to a job. Moreover, the block applies across all service areas – not just one document type. So the protection is thorough and consistent throughout the service workflow.
Warehouse Shipment Now Integrated with the Service Module
Warehouse shipment processing is now fully available in the service module. Before this update, service documents sat outside the standard warehouse flow. Companies that needed full warehouse processing for service shipments had to use custom code or find a workaround. Now, service documents work with the same pick, shipment, and warehouse documents used for sales orders. Therefore, the gap between service and sales in the warehouse area is now closed.
In this way, the service module connects properly with the warehouse management side of BC. Also, businesses that run both a service team and a warehouse can now manage all outbound shipments through one process. As a result, this update removes a common reason for custom development in service-heavy BC set-ups. Furthermore, it means fewer exceptions to manage. The operations team gets a simpler, more consistent workflow. In practice, this is one of the most impactful changes in the release for companies that handle physical parts or equipment on service jobs.
Coming Soon: Subscription Billing
Beyond the four updates already live, Microsoft announced that subscription billing is coming to the service module. This feature lets you set up recurring billing directly within BC – no third-party app needed. It was not yet released with Wave 2 but is planned for the near future. Moreover, this is one of the most requested additions from businesses that sell recurring service contracts. So it is a feature worth watching for in the next release cycle. Many companies currently use a workaround or a spare tool to handle this. Once the feature ships, they can manage it all within BC. That is a real gain for the service area.
Wrapping Up: New Service Module Features in Business Central

The 2024 Wave 2 release brings the service module closer in line with the rest of BC. Attachments, posting policy, item blocking, and warehouse shipment are now all available for service. In short, this release removes several old gaps in one go for any BC user running service.
Additionally, the billing feature is one to look forward to. It will make the service area a more complete tool for businesses that run recurring contracts. Check the Microsoft release notes for the latest on when it becomes available.
